The 18 armed (ashtA dasa bhuja) chandikA is depicted as seated upon a lion , and trampling the Mahisha under her foot and holds with one of her hands the demon' by his hair ( daitya-murdhaja mushtika) while the 8 other 16 armed (shodasa bhuja) nAyikA shaktis are each seated on a lotus, surrounding the main 18 armed chandikA, in the 8 directions. They are : (1) Rudra candA (appears in bright red complexion resembling a red lotus) (2) candOgra ( whose complexion resembles the hue of arunOdhaya ) (3) pracandA (the one with dark (Krishna) complexion) (4) Canda nAyikA ( meditated as having blue (nIla) complexion ) (5) CandA ( meditated as having a white complexion) (6) candAvatI ( she is depicted as dhUmra varna (smoky)) (7) Canda RupA ( She has a golden/yellowish complexion) (8) aticandikA( she is said to be in pAndurA varna ( pale white)) The main DurgA / ChandikA is known by the name Ugra ChandA and she is depicted as having the complexion of a blazing fire ( vanhi samnibhA) adorned with all kind of ornaments. These 8 nAyikAs along with the main goddess are worshipped as navadurga / navachandikA.
